The land, the legend

The Farm sits on the slopes of Te Mata Peak, one of Hawke's Bay's most storied landmarks. Known to Māori as Te Mata o Rongokako- the face of Rongokako - the peak rises 399 metres above the Heretaunga Plains, its reclining ridgeline tracing the silhouette of a giant at rest.

Centuries ago, the people of Heretaunga lived under threat from the coastal tribes of Waimārama. To bring peace, Hinerakau, daughter of a Pakipaki chief, won the heart of the giant leader of the enemy tribe. Though they fell deeply in love, her people demanded he prove his loyalty through impossible feats. The final challenge was to bite a passage through the hills between the coast and plains. He died trying, leaving the unfinished gap known as Pari Karangaranga — the echoing cliffs. His resting body forms the distinctive landscape known as Te Mata o Rongokako, the sleeping giant.

The peak is a place of profound mana and ancestry, shaping our local and regional identity. Different hapū of the region view Te Mata from many perspectives, with different stories being passed down about the maunga. We acknowledge mana whenua as the traditional guardians (kaitiaki) of this land, and consider it a privilege to share its stories.
